Knowledge Networking Portal for Sustainable & Responsible Tourism
My role and interest in sustainable tourism is as Animator/Co-ordinator for the Burren Ecotourism Network in Co. Clare, Ireland. Burren Ecotourism represents 37 tourism operators who collaborate on a number of fronts, namely networking, conservation and marketing. Information on the visitor proposition can be found on our website www.burrenecotourism.com. Our aim is to promote the Burren as a premier international ecotourism destination; it's objective is to ensure that every visitor to the area has an exciting and memorable holiday experience, which in turn supports sustainability and conservation efforts in the local community. The business network prides itself on providing genuine and authentic experiences for all visitors to the Burren, with a strong emphasis on the local people, local food as well as informative and/or exhilirating nature-based activities. The Network has provided tourism-based businesses with a way to maintain a high standard of sustainability through an eco-certification process. Each operator involved with the network has, or is in the process of having, visitor experiences independently certified. This assures visitors that when they support such businesses, they are supporting environmentally-conscious operators who are committed to long-term sustainability and conservation of the Burren.
