News To mark the Vancouver Olympic Games, a Peace through Tourism Folder is launched on DestiNet

As the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics draws to a close, we need to reassess how to implement the Olympic Truce so that we can really create 16 days of global peace at the London Olympics. A peace dividend in 2012 has to be seen as good for the industry, for the planet, and for the people.  Peace is one of the basic preconditions for sustainable development. Sustainable tourism and peace go hand in hand.  Peace provides the basis for travel, whereas war and conflict disrupt tourist activity. Very often tourism is used a means to regenerate war-affected areas, or develop conflict resolution processes (cf Mozambique, Palestine).  Peace is also essential for the preservation of the environment and biodiversity, both of which are casualties of war.

Tourism stakeholders have a unique role to play in setting up the Truce, as we cut across all walks of life, economic sectors and geographical divides. Stakeholders are also in a unique position to benefit from using the opportunity of a period of global peace during the Olympic Games to boost tourism activity worldwide.  ´Olympic Peace through Tourism London 2012 - Defining Tourism Stakeholders` Contributions`

provides a coordinated multi-stakeholder blueprint for immediate action if we are to make the 2012 date. Despite the best efforts of established groups such as the IIPT and the Vancouver City contribution

current efforts are clearly not achieving the Truce, so it is time to up our efforts to match the challenge of this monumental task. There is now a folder on the DestiNet Portal on Sustainable Tourism to build a map of stakeholder contributions to this process. See
