Folder Olympic Peace through Tourism London 2012

London 2012

The sub-folder Olympic Peace though Tourism London 2012 establishes a supporting process on DestiNet that aims to bring tourism stakeholders together to develop 16 days of peace through tourism during the London 2012 Olympics. The concept involves using tourism as a means of stimulating cultural understanding to promote this period of peace during the games.  Such a vision includes increasing sustainable tourism activity to benefit all nations participating in the Games, particularly those suffering the greatest conflict.  This  folder will  map stakeholder peace initiatives in the build up to London 2012.

 In a nutshell:

In the grip of multiple global crises, a global population above 7 billion and on the brink of socio-economic and environmental limits, the aim: to achieve the UN-backed 16 day Worldwide Truce during the London 2012 Olympics.  Inner Peace, Global Peace - moving from a culture of violence to a culture of peace - we all want it, the world needs it.  It`s for the people, the planet and prosperity for all-  it needs your participation – we can do it together, and when it happens we will glimpse a truly sustainable international world order, and all benefit personally and collectively.

Tourism stakeholders have a unique role to play in setting up the Truce, as we cut across all walks of life, economic sectors and geographical divides. Stakeholders are also in a unique position to benefit from using the opportunity of a period of global peace during the Olympic Games to boost tourism activity locally and worldwide. The document Olympic Peace London 2012 Campaign Overview provides an overalll vision of this truely Big Society initiative. and  Olympic Peace through Tourism London 2012 - Defining Tourism Stakeholders` Contributions provides a coordinated multi-stakeholder blueprint for immediate action if we are to make the 2012 date.

Preparation of the Truce period for past Olympics can be built upon. For the 2004 Greek Olympics, a comprehensive manual  ´16 Days: The role of the Olympic Truce in the toolkit for peace`was prepared, providing a multi-stakeholder strategic approach to organising such a monumental task:

´This analysis – that the causes of conflict are highly distributed – suggests that the practical and moral responsibility for peace-building should also be distributed if efforts are to be successful. As has been suggested elsewhere in this report, this means that the work of the Olympic Truce should encompass a wide range of actors – the Olympic Movement, international bodies such as the UN, national governments and their political leaders, sportsmen and women, the non-governmental community, the media and communications industry, sports networks and Olympic Games host cities.`  Businesses are also invited to sponsor this process, and will be needed to get the message to the right people.

The Vancouver Winter Olympic Games 2010 invoked the call for peace, and provided educators with a manual entitled Make your Peace (see below).

The VISTAs (Visions' International Sustainable Tourism Awards) has a special Peace through Tourism category to map and celebrate the coalition of the willing who will contribute to this Olympic effort.
