Finalist, Community Benefit Award

The Siraj Center, located east of the ancient town of Bethlehem in Palestine, is a community tourism non-profit organisation with two aims: to provide capacity building and training opportunities in sustainable tourism development under the ownership of local communities; and to promote Palestine as a sustainable tourism destination to international tourists, as an alternative to the area's long time dependence on the mass-tourism pilgrimage market. Since its inception, Siraj has enrolled 147 communities, all of whom are now offering low-impact, sustainable tourism programs and activities. In particular, Siraj is also bringing tangible social and economic benefits to local women.
