Bus and train operator Arriva is one of the largest transport organisations in Europe, carrying around 1 billion passengers annually across 12 countries. It has extensively trialled the use of biofuel blends in both trains and buses, and from May 2007 to October 2008, it trialled an emissions control initiative on its buses known as 'EcoManager', training drivers to be more fuel efficient and improving vehicle performance, which the company says saved over 100,000 litres of fuel and over 260 tonnes of CO2. The success of the trial has led to the system being fitted in 3,000 buses in the UK and equivalent technology is to be introduced into Arriva's fleet of 2,300 buses in Sweden and Denmark.
