At present, 5% of the energy consumed comes from renewable sources but the local government has plans in place to reach 100% in 2020. To reach this goal Ameland is involved in the Cradle to Cradle project, in which existing holiday houses are built energetically selfsufficient. There is an annual sustainable energy fair to inform the business and agricultural sector about efficiency measures. The public transport by bus is on natural gas and there is free public transport to island inhabitants over 65 years. 75% of the beaches have been awarded a blue flag and all beaches have excellent bathing water quality. On the beaches it is possible to separate glass, batteries and paper. Ameland participates in the Fishing for Litter, in which fishers and beachcombers are engaged in collecting marine litter. Silver Award 2011.
