As a result of 14 years of conservation, Mamirauá is today inhabited by animals that are difficult to observe in areas closer to Manaus. The Uakari Floating Lodge is named after one of the flagship species, the white uakari monkey. The lodge has been designed for low impact (solar energy, sewage system, building materials) and spacious comfort. Tours are designed to enhance the visitor experience during the various seasons. Apart from wildlife observation, visitors get a unique opportunity to see what the Mamiraua Institute is doing in terms of sustainable use of rainforest resources, conservation, research and community work. The lodge is run in partnership with the local community. The ecotourism program generates economic benefits to locals, and invests its profits in community projects, surveillance of the area environmental education, as specified in the annual report.
