In 2006 the Faculty of Economics, University of Cagliari, with the support of UNO Consortium, established a Research Center on Tourism. The activity of the CRT is mainly concerned with the inventory of investigations carried out on tourist flows within the region and existing databases and activation of the statistical survey for the acquisition of stimuli in order to prepare a questionnaire to be submitted to the industry and to the involved communities. Project: "Local sustainable development and tourism" (from 2005 to 2007). The main objective of this research is to produce a coherent framework in which various issues related to tourism development are grafted on local development issues. It 'also aimed to combine these two research themes with the broader issue of sustainability as a tool for sustainable growth when linked to an endogenous process community-based and community-driven. This is broken down into three dimensions (environmental, economic and social), considering environmental, social acceptability (from the perspective of the principles of Local Agenda 21) and long-term economic profitability based on a correct and socially acceptable system use of scarce resources, even those on which tourism is based. This new approach consists on a "structural" and "welfare" approach to tourism and local development. The research also aims to test alternative theoretical designs, as well as policy implications for the governance of development processes resulting, through experiments and empirical investigations. Start from a comparative review on the theories, methodologies and analytical tools available, in the light of reflection on concrete experiences in some of the sites where this model was made ??(Tuscany, Sardinia, Emilia Romagna) or is carried out (Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico). The objective pursued by the research unit of Cagliari (4 partners) is to contribute to a better and more reliable assessment of the role that tourism can play as a driver of sustainable aggregate growth, especially in countries and regions lagging in Europe and Mediterranean areas.
