Since 1996, the Department of Sociology and Political Sciences is an active Observatory on Tourism which, since 2007, has assumed its present name of Tourism Research and Studies Center (CREST). CREST pursues the aim of stimulating the acquisition of basic knowledge and advanced understanding of facts, the interpretation and explanation of the continuous transformations which the phenomenon of tourism is submitted (and which, in turn, generates about the company), and initiatives whose aim is to facilitate scientific study and research. Some of the specific objectives of the study and research include: residential tourism, tourist and the interrelationships among the host population, the study of the social figure of the tourist, sustainable tourism and social tourism, the relationship between tourism and leisure activities, the relationship between tourism and urbanization, the relationship between tourism and globalization, the relationship between tourism and local development, the study of tourism in Calabria and the problems that limit its growth. CREST carryes out activities of study, research and documentation of scientific and service activities for the Department of Sociology and Political Science and the Faculty and Undergraduate University of Calabria, and also develops projects
