OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS
according to following SDGs on Tourism4SDGs.org: |
Please indicate very briefly their exemplary or innovative actions and measurable achievements (including quantified results if known) |
SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production The tourism sector needs to adopt sustainable consumption and production (SCP) modes, accelerating the shift towards sustainability. Tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for tourism including for energy, water, waste, biodiversity and job creation will result in enhanced economic, social and environmental outcomes. |
|
SDG 13 - Climate Action Tourism contributes to and is affected by climate change. Tourism stakeholders should play a leading role in the global response to climate change. By reducing its carbon footprint, in the transport and accommodation sector, tourism can benefit from low carbon growth and help tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time. |
|
SDG 14 – Life below Water Coastal and maritime tourism rely on healthy marine ecosystems. Tourism development must be a part of Integrated Coastal Zone Management in order to help conserve and preserve fragile marine ecosystems and serve as a vehicle to promote a blue economy, contributing to the sustainable use of marine resources. |
The hotel is home to the creation of a biodiverse reef dyke. Located underwater 100 metres from the shore, this dyke has been designed to protect the beach and allow the development of marine life within a protected area. The new space is similar to a lagoon, with a sandy beach surrounded by Posidonia and rocks. The area is suitable for swimmers who are encouraged to act responsibly and be respectful of the sea life and their habitat.
Monte-Carlo Beach is committed to the development of a strategy to manage the Marine Protected Areas of the Principality of Monaco under the aegis of the Monegasque Association of Nature Protection. As with all the hotels located on the seafront, Monte-Carlo Beach actively participates in this plan by preserving its 1.7 km of coastline - La Réserve du Larvotto - which represents a quartar of the Monegasque coast.
|
SDG 15 – Life on Land Rich biodiversity and natural heritage are often the main reasons why tourists visit a destination. Tourism can play a major role if sustainably managed in fragile zones, not only in conserving and preserving biodiversity, but also in generating revenue as an alternative livelihood to local communities. |
Ecological initiatives remain a key priority at Monte-Carlo Beach which has its own natural forest located onsite. The Pointe de la Vigie and its superb pine forest has been classified as an LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux) bird protection refuge since July 2019. The latest wildlife inventory listed no fewer than 20 species of birds, including 10 nesting species and 15 protected species. This site at Monte-Carlo Beach is steadily becoming an essential refuge for local biodiversity.
|
SDG 8 - Decent work and Economic Growth Tourism, as services trade, is one of the top four export earners globally, currently providing one in ten jobs worldwide. Decent work opportunities in tourism, particularly for youth and women, and policies that favour better diversification through tourism value chains can enhance tourism positive socio-economic impacts. |
Exemplary or innovative actions:
Measurable achievements:
|
SDG 17 - Partnership for the Goals Due to its cross-sectoral nature, tourism has the ability to strengthen private/public partnerships and engage multiple stakeholders – international, national, regional and local – to work together to achieve the SDGs and other common goals. Public policy and innovative financing are at the core for achieving the 2030 Agenda. |
The hotel signed The Relais et Chateaux Vision at UNESCO in Paris in 2014. Relais et Chateaux is a membership association for independent hoteliers committed to a vision of sustainability for the future. This vision encourages signatories to support wide-ranging matters such as local farmers and fishermen, to protect and promote biodiversity, reduce food waste and save energy and water.
Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel supports local charities and takes part in different actions to fulfill its social responsibilities. The hotel participates in the annual Monacology event that educates Monegasques children about ecology through various workshops. In addition, several hundred kilos of plastic caps are collected each year for the French charity Bouchons d’amour (Caps of Love) that raises money for disabled people by selling plastic bottle caps to a company that recycles plastic into plastic pallets. The property also helps the Monegasque association Anges Gardiens (Guardian Angels) with their work to improve homeless people’s lives. Retired pillows and bed covers and products such as left over shampoo, shower gel and body lotion are donated for distribution to those in need.
