2. WHY
Reason for taking the good practice action

Tourism-related enterprises need to participate in waste reduction and recycling.

More public buldings need to be included in the energy saving programme.

Actions for innovation:

  • The Municipality of Alonnisos is using 90% of its recyclable waste. 

  • The Municipality also promotes the inclusion of some of its buildings, such as the Nursery, into the energy saving programme (Green buildings).

  • Alonnisos participated in the nationwide action "Let's do it Greece" in April, which concerned the voluntary coastal clean-up. 

  • The Marine Club in collaboration with the non-profit organisation  MOm organized a voluntary clean-up of the coasts of Peristera island.

  • The Marine Club in collaboration with the diving centers also organized a voluntary clean-up of the seabed of Rousoum coast. 

  • The systematic clean-up of the coasts by a contract seasonal staff during the summer months.

4. RESULT
Specific/measurable results, benefits  
  • The Municipality of Alonnisos is considered the most efficient Municipality at using recycling methods in Greece.

  • Diving tourism and other alternative forms of tourism are being promoted. 

  • The underwater coast cleaning will be intensified by next summer.

  • Excursions to the water park and the Isle Piperi will be organized from the Parents' Association of the Elementary Schools of Alonnisos, in collaboration with the Yacht Club, to bring the students into contact with the marine park.
