Vitosha is the oldest protected area in the Republic of Bulgaria and in the Balkans, declared a park in 1934. Over the years it has changed its territorial scope, conservation status and management. After the adoption of the current Law on Protected Areas in 1998, Vitosha was re-categorized into a Nature Park by Order RD-349 of 14/07/2000. Then, the modern Directorate of the Park was established, whose functions include: the management plan, projects and programs development on the territory of the park; carrying out and organising events for protection and restoration of biological and landscape diversity; conducting educational and interpretive activities; construction and maintenance of the park infrastructure for servicing tourism and recreation; organising and participating in the implementation of tourist and recreational activities; implementation of scientific and scientific-applied activities on the territory of the park; creating and maintaining a database, collecting and disseminating information about the park and its adjacent territories. The area of ​​the park amounts to about 27,000 ha.
