The Huaorani Ecolodge is a joint venture between indigenous communities and the tour operator Tropic. The lodge is situated about an hour's walk from the commmunity of Quehueri'ono in terra firma rainforest. The comfortable an secure lodge consists of five Huaorani-style palm thatched cabins fully fitted with all the necessary amenities.The many activities that visitors can enjoy include tours through the Amazon Rainforest with informative local guides, cultural tours, bird watching, educational programs, hiking, nocturnal tours, visits to local communities and wildlife observation. The Ecotourism project provides the Huaorani families with an alternative source of income. Huaorani community members were involved in the Lodge's construction and form the majority of the employees, there are also plans to create complementary low impact small businesses to increase local employment. Produce is purchased locally. Energy is produced via solar panels. Biodegradable products are used in housekeeping service and bathrooms, and bio-filter renders all waste products either recyclable or harmless before being discharged into the river. A constant effort is made to improve perfomance and minimise impacts.
