Black Sheep Inn is an ecologically friendly hotel high in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Perched on a hillside the rural eco-lodge is a perfect place to discover centuries-old culture and diverse ecosystems. We offer affordable accommodation and provide a great base for day hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, acclimatizing and exploring indigenous markets.We supported and initiated various programms which benefit the local community like establishing a local Public Library/Computer Learning Center, sponsoring workshops in family planning, guiding skills in native flora and fauna, guiding ethics, first-aid for hikers, nutrition and women’s health, and knitting. Locally knit crafts are displayed and sold in the lodge and proceeds go directly to the artisans. We received the 2006 Ecolodge Award for building a Community Recycling Center and the 2008 Ecolodge Award for starting a Native Tree Nursery. All water is recycled and all gardening organic.

The cross-channel ferry operator, which also operates several ferry services from the UK to northern Spain, has carried out a number of fuel efficiency programmes, including rescheduling most of its crossings, which it says saved around 2,000 tonnes of fuel during 2008. From July it will start using fuel with a sulphur content of only 1% on all cruise-ferries whilst its high-speed vessel already uses fuel with less than 0.1% sulphur content. Also, on its ferries to Spain across the Bay of Biscay (one of the best places in Europe to spot whales and dolphins), it hosts researchers from marine research organisation ORCA who give presentations on marine conservation and relay sightings during the crossing. Home to one of the world's richest coral gardens, six kilometres off the west coast of Zanzibar, Chumbe Island is a bit special. Part luxury retreat, part educational centre for marine biology and environmental protection, the turquoise waters around the island are home to four hundred species of fish and two hundred species of stone coral. Fishing and scuba diving is banned in the reserve, but you can follow snorkelling trails along the island’s shallow reef. Accommodation is in beautifully designed bandas (two-tiered bungalows), rainwater is harvested and solar energy powers the showers and basins.
