A guide through the tourism label jungle – updated and extended

Vienna, 6 March 214

The updated edition of the popular booklet „A guide through the tourism label jungle“will be presented at the world´s leading travel fair ITB in Berlin on 8 March 2014. It was edited by the Working Group on Tourism & Development (arbeitskreis tourismus & entwicklung - akte), ECOTRANS e.V., Bread for the World – Tourism Watch and Naturefriends International (NFI). The continuing interest in this guide, which was first published in 2012, shows that there is a great demand for information about the different sustainability labels.

In the handy brochure the leading international quality labels for accommodation providers, travel offers and tour operators are presented and their credibility evaluated. Who is behind the certification system? Are the criteria transparent and have they been published? Is the verification procedure reliable? Are all subject areas of sustainability included? „In the new edition, the focus remained on sustainability labels in the German-speaking countries as well as in popular European holiday countries“, says Andreas Zotz (NFI).

A new criterion is the global recognition of the labels. „High-quality sustainability labels are internationally recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). We also assessed the labels in that respect“, explains Herbert Hamele (ECOTRANS) who is responsible for the label check.

There are far more sustainability labels in tourism than the 20 labels presented. In order to provide a better overview, the new edition includes a list of 30 labels in which, besides hotels and tour operators, also campsites, beaches, attractions or entire destinations are independently inspected and certified in several countries.
